The Baker Museum exhibitions to include multisensory works by
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and Ann Patchett-inspired works by Becky Suss
Naples, Fla. (April 15, 2024) – Artis—Naples, Southwest Florida’s premier destination for the visual and performing arts, announced today its 2024-25 performing arts subscription season and highlights of The Baker Museum’s exhibition season. The subscription and exhibition programming underscore the commitment Artis—Naples makes to its multidisciplinary mission with world-class offerings in the visual arts, classical music, symphonic pops, dance, touring Broadway productions, holiday programming and more. The full season, including individual presentations, will be announced in July 2024.
“We have laid the groundwork for a truly memorable 2024-25 season, especially as we welcome Alexander Shelley for his first season as Sharon and Timothy Ubben Artistic and Music Director,” said Artis—Naples CEO and President Kathleen van Bergen. “With such a diverse array of multidisciplinary artistic experiences on the horizon, from captivating exhibitions to exhilarating performances, next season promises to be one filled with opportunities for inspiration and storytelling, inviting the diverse Southwest Florida community to engage deeply with the arts and each other.”

Chamber music delights in Daniels Pavilion

As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic, Selections from the Wedge Collection
As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic, Selections from the Wedge Collection presents an exciting range of photographs from African diasporic culture, providing a timely exploration of Black identity on all sides of the Atlantic. Drawn from the Wedge Collection in Toronto, which is dedicated to artists of African descent, the exhibition includes artists such as Stan Douglas, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Barkley L. Hendricks, Liz Johnson Artur, Seydou Keïta, Deana Lawson, Jamel Shabazz, Texas Isaiah, James Van Der Zee and Carrie Mae Weems, who touch on themes of agency, beauty, joy, belonging, subjectivity and self-representation. This exhibition is organized by Aperture, New York.

Deep Cuts from the Ahmet Ertegün Collection
This popular exhibition, which debuted during the 2023-24 season, has been extended until November 2024. In 2000, the same year it opened to the public, The Baker Museum acquired one of its most important holdings: the Ahmet Ertegün Collection. Assembled by the Turkish American businessman best known as the founder and president of Atlantic Records, the collection features a remarkable selection of modern art from the United States that demonstrates Ertegün’s comprehension of and intuitiveness about rhythm, pattern and color. Featured artists include Irene Rice Pereira, Gertrude Glass (Greene), Esphyr Slobodkina, Oscar Bluemner and Ilya Bolotowsky, among others.

Alex Katz: Theater and Dance
Alex Katz: Theater and Dance is the first comprehensive exhibition to explore the inventive collaborations of Alex Katz with choreographers, dancers and avant-garde theater ensembles over six decades. It showcases works by innovators across the performing arts and poetry and highlights 15 productions Katz produced with the Paul Taylor Dance Company. This exhibition is co-organized by the Colby College Museum of Art and the American Federation of the Arts and curated by guest curator Levi Prombaum. This presentation at Artis—Naples, The Baker Museum is curated by Dianne Brás-Feliciano, Ph.D., curator of modern art.

This annual exhibition presents three notable artists practicing in Florida. Highlighting the diversity of artistic approaches to personal, local and global themes, the 12th edition of this exhibition invites visitors to celebrate the state’s vibrant art scene.

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Obra Sonora/Sound Work
For more than three decades, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer has integrated art, science, architecture and technology into his trailblazing artistic practice. The internationally celebrated Mexican-Canadian artist is known for his participatory installations, which have been showcased in major solo exhibitions at the Hirshhorn Museum, SFMoMA and Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal, among many others. Obra Sonora/Sound Work, organized by Artis—Naples, The Baker Museum, will include monumental works such as Field Atmosphonia, a sound and light environment featuring 3,000 audio channels playing on custom-made speakers with LED lights, and Sphere Packing: Bach, a 10-foot-diameter sphere that supports 1,128 speakers—each playing a different composition by Johann Sebastian Bach. This will be the first museum exhibition to explore Lozano-Hemmer’s use of music, voice and sound, and it will be the largest-ever museum presentation of his work in the southeastern United States.

Entangled in the Mangroves
Entangled in the Mangroves features 10 artists based in Florida who explore different aspects of the Everglades, focusing on climate change. The goal of this exhibition is to raise awareness about the critical situation affecting the ecosystem and foster connections between artists, activists, Indigenous communities, scientists and scholars to develop multidisciplinary approaches for solutions that benefit all species. The project includes a diverse range of media, a multisensory installation, a reading room and an educational program. This exhibition is organized by Artis—Naples, The Baker Museum with the collaboration of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida and is curated by Dianne Brás-Feliciano, Ph.D., curator of modern art.

Led by CEO and President Kathleen van Bergen and, beginning in the 2024-25 season, Sharon and Timothy Ubben Artistic and Music Director Alexander Shelley, Artis—Naples offers more than 800 paid and free events annually across its 8.5-acre Kimberly K. Querrey and Louis A. Simpson Cultural Campus. Artis—Naples welcomes thousands of visitors each year for a broad array of artistic and educational opportunities perfect for audiences of all backgrounds and interests. The cultural campus is home to five buildings, including two performance halls (Frances Pew Hayes Hall and Myra J. Daniels Pavilion), The Baker Museum, the Toni Stabile Education Building and the Kohan Administration Building.
NAPLES PHILHARMONIC
The Naples Philharmonic has long been recognized as one of the cornerstones of Southwest Florida’s arts community. As part of Artis—Naples, the Naples Philharmonic performs more than 140 orchestral and chamber music concerts, as well as opera and ballet, education, community and special event concerts annually between September and June in the 1,477-seat Hayes Hall, the 283-seat Daniels Pavilion and around the Southwest Florida region. The Naples Philharmonic has enjoyed a history of working with world-class music directors and recently announced the appointment of Artistic and Music Director Alexander Shelley, who immediately assumes the role of Artistic and Music Director Designate through the 2023-24 season. Renowned violinist James Ehnes continues as artistic partner through the 2023-24 season, working with Naples Philharmonic musicians in a variety of settings with a focus on inspiring and embodying a high level of artistry. Podium leadership includes Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly, celebrating 14 years in this role in the 2023-24 season and bringing pops performances that celebrate music in its many forms. Radu Paponiu serves as associate conductor of the Naples Philharmonic and director of the Naples Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and Alvin Ho serves as assistant conductor of the Naples Philharmonic.
THE BAKER MUSEUM
The Baker Museum is the foremost fine art museum in Southwest Florida, presenting an ambitious slate of exhibitions annually to complement installations of works from its permanent collection. Comprising more than 4,000 objects, the museum’s broad holdings of 20th- and 21st-century art reflect particular strengths in modern art of the United States and Mexico. The Baker Museum's collections reflect the generosity and commitment of area collectors, including significant gifts from the collection of the late Olga Hirshhorn.
With more than two decades of collecting and exhibiting, the museum is committed to the stewardship and scholarship of its collections and to fostering inspiring and transformative experiences with the visual arts. At the same time, The Baker Museum partners with the world’s leading arts institutions to make extraordinary exhibitions accessible to the Southwest Florida community—including recently the National Portrait Gallery, London and the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation. In 2020, Artis—Naples celebrated the opening of an 18,000-square-foot expansion of The Baker Museum, designed by Weiss/Manfredi Architecture/Landscape/Urbanism, which created new spaces for multidisciplinary exploration and social interaction.
EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY
In addition to creating and presenting visual and performing arts, Artis—Naples provides robust education and community activities for students of all ages in Collier and counties. Each season, thousands of Collier County Public Schools interact with Artis—Naples education programming, both on its cultural campus and in their classrooms. Beyond our commitment to youth education, the Lifelong Learning program provides engaging lectures and study opportunities for adults seeking to engage more deeply with the arts.
The Friends of Artis—Naples, comprised of more than 3,500 donor households, offers activities, travel experiences and events designed to foster a deeper relationship between patrons and the arts.
In 2017, Artis—Naples acquired the Naples International Film Festival (NIFF), expanding its film offerings and providing a platform for the festival’s continued excellence and growth. In 2023, the festival’s 15th anniversary year, NIFF was named one of MovieMaker Magazine’s “20 Great Film Festivals in Vacation Destinations.”
