2023 Opening Night Film: Hard Miles  East Coast Premiere

Hard Miles takes a page from the heartfelt, humor-filled coming-of-age sports dramas that graced our screens in the ’80s and ’90s. Inspired by true events at Ridgeview Academy, a medium-security correctional school in Colorado, the film follows beleaguered social workers Greg (Matthew Modine) and Haddie (Cynthia Kaye McWilliams) as they round up an unlikely crew of incarcerated students for a seemingly impossible bike ride from Denver to the Grand Canyon. Together they hope this arduous journey will transform the misfit teenagers into a well-disciplined cycling team that works together.

A Filmmaker’s Oasis

One of the defining features of the Naples International Film Festival is its unwavering commitment to supporting filmmakers. The festival invites both established and up-and- coming filmmakers to be part of the experience, where they attend a variety of events throughout the four-day festival.

Unlike larger festivals, NIFF maintains an intimate atmosphere, allowing for personalized attention to each film in the program. The filmmakers at this festival are not just spectators; they’re an integral part of the experience. Post-film Q&As and panel discussions create opportunities for meaningful interactions between filmmakers and audiences. Whether it’s sharing insights during Q&A sessions, bonding over drinks and appetizers, or collaborating on future projects, NIFF cultivates an environment where connections are forged, and creative partnerships can flourish.

Building Bridges Beyond the Festival

The Naples International Film Festival’s impact extends well beyond its four-day duration. The festival has a proud tradition of nurturing lasting relationships with its filmmaker alumni, who become part of an extremely supportive community that values collaboration and growth. The bonds formed at NIFF often lead to lifelong friendships, future collaborations, and the development of groundbreaking creative projects.

As the festival continues to grow, it’s inspiring to witness the evolution of careers and the unfolding of new cinematic narratives. NIFF’s commitment to its alumni underscores its dedication to the art of filmmaking and its pivotal role in shaping the future of local cinema.
