Art In Balance showcases a thoughtfully curated selection of works, emphasizing Henri Matisse's mastery of engraving from 1938 through his final years. The exhibition highlights his ability to achieve harmony in his compositions, blending vibrant colors and bold use of black to evoke beauty, serenity, or passion. Printmaking, which Matisse considered an extension of drawing, played a pivotal role in his career. He created over 800 engravings using diverse techniques such as lithography, aquatint, and linocut. Even during challenging times, such as his recovery from surgery in 1941 and the upheaval of World War II, Matisse adapted his methods, producing daring works, including his iconic “painting with scissors” paper cut-outs.
