Naples Philharmonic Masterworks: Rhapsody in Blue
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, the Naples Philharmonic presents a program of two versions of the masterpiece: first in its original form for piano and jazz band — a quintessential example of the American jazz age with its syncopated rhythms, bluesy harmonies and virtuosic piano solos — and then in the more well-known version for full symphony orchestra that brings out new colors and nuances in the music. Esteemed guest conductor David Robertson makes his Naples Philharmonic debut with acclaimed pianist Orli Shaham as soloist in this unique exploration of Gershwin’s beloved masterwork. The program also includes two works by Arnold Schoenberg, a friend and colleague of Gershwin — Chamber Symphony No. 1 as well as Five Pieces for Orchestra.
